Coach Coolidge Aims To Take Ravens Women To The Top

By Mike Beasley /

This is an advisory to all the women’s hockey teams in the Quebec Student Sports Federation...the Carleton Ravens have their sight sets on the league title this season.

With head coach Shelley Coolidge in charge of the Carleton program, she wouldn’t settle for anything less.

Coolidge took over the women’s team last summer after six years behind the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees bench.

Now with her first Ravens training camp under her belt, she has the team locked and loaded for the upcoming season.

Coolidge wasn’t afraid to ruffle a couple of feathers during the tryouts last month as she sent several veterans packing in favour of new and hungrier recruits.

“I came in here at the beginning of the semester and held the kids accountable for their on-ice performances,” Coolidge explained.

“I informed every one of the girls prior to our first skate that they would have to commit to the program and compete for ice time every time they stepped on the ice. Those that bought in stayed around, those that didn’t...were gone.”

It’s that same competitive and professional attitude that helped Coolidge and her Gee-Gees squad’s to four CIS Women’s national appearances in the last six years.

The Ravens have a nice mix of veteran leadership and youthful exuberance on their roster this season.

“We (Carleton) have a large roster of 25 girls with a pretty even split of veteran and rookies,” Coolidge said.

Goaltenders Valerie Charbonneau and Amanda Muhlig are Carleton’s only fifth year players.

Charbonneau has been with the Ravens since their inception in to the CIS at the beginning of the 2005/06 campaign.

The remainder of the team consists of 10 new faces with 13 members in their second, third of fourth year of eligibility.

“I’m very happy with the make-up of our roster I think we have the potential to be very successful this season. This year my goal is no different than others, it just so happens that it’s with another team. I want to get the Carleton Ravens women’s hockey team to the CIS Nationals for the first time in the program’s history.”

With Coolidge now running the show, don’t be surprised if the Ravens end up there.
