| Uptempo: By Ryan Walter - 3-on-2’s a Fundamental Element of Team Success |
|
| |
Playing the 3-on-2 from both the offensive and defensive sides often determines the outcome of your team’s game. 3-on-2’s are a must for nearly every practice plan and this low/high continuous 3-on-2 drill is an exceptional way to work on these skills:
- Place opposite color lines in opposite corners. - Then place two defenseman protecting the low 3-on-2. - Also place two defensemen on the blueline. On the whistle, the low (corner cycle) 3-on-2 plays out. Ask the 3-on-2 players to work the puck back to either point for a shot. -Spot another puck in the corner and ask the 3-on-2 to cycle to the net with the second puck. - On the next whistle, have a coach spot a puck for the D around the far blue line where the D retrieve the puck and pass D-to-D and up to the three forwards who are backchecking into the neutral zone and now skate in 3-on-2. - As soon as the D have moved the puck, they retreat to defend the other puck in the opposite corner 3-on-2. A new D pair line up across the blue line and three new forwards skate with a puck to the opposite corner to keep the continuous sequence going.
This 3-on-2 drill gives forwards and defensemen three specific looks. The corner cycle, the back-to-the D point shot and the 3-on-2 from the neutral zone are all game situation plays in which every hockey team in the world wants to be better.
