| Kitchener Rangers do it right |
|
| |
By / Mike Beasley
With the Holiday Season fast approaching I would like to bring to your attention a special moment of giving in the Ontario Hockey League.
For the third consecutive year, the Kitchener Rangers wore a special Remembrance Day jersey during a regular season game in honour of our Canadian war heroes.
The commemorative jersey was worn twice last month. The premiere of these unique sweaters was on Friday, Nov. 2 when the Rangers hosted the Erie Otters at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Complex and the second time was on the road in Ottawa against the 67’s on Nov. 11.
The jersey portrayed the Remembrance Day theme and honoured the 1956 Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen, who were Canada’s Olympic Hockey team that year. The one-of-a-kind sweater had the Rangers shields on the shoulder and the maple leaf with a poppy centered on the crest. The jerseys continued with the organization’s long-standing tradition and were in Ranger blue.
A silent auction of these distinguished collectables raised a record $19,772 with the proceeds going to the 78th Fraser Highlanders, Fort Conestoga Garrison and Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund.
The Fraser Highlanders will be responsible for the distribution of the proceeds that will assist veterans and their families.
In the past three years, the Kitchener Rangers Remembrance Day jerseys have raised more than $51,000 for various charities and beneficiaries.
Great job Kitchener and many thanks to our war veterans and Canadian Armed Forces stationed throughout the world.
TOURNEY TIME On a much lighter note, the kids will be out of school in a couple of weeks.
Christmas break means one, probably two things in the hearts of every hockey family – presents and hockey tournaments.
In the province of Ontario, all you have to do is top by your local arena to find some sort of competition.
If you’re an Atom or Peewee aged player then the Ninth Annual Bell Capital Cup in Ottawa is the place for you. Close to 500 teams from eight countries will take over rinks in the Nation’s Capital from Dec. 28 to Jan. 1.
The Toronto Marlboros will be running their International Holiday Classic for AAA Bantam and Midget teams Dec. 26 to 30. The Paul Coffey International Christmas Tournament hosted by the Mississauga Jets will be held December 27 to 30.
Categories include Minor Atom to Midget AA and Juvenile AAA. The Don Mills Flyers International Tournament for AAA Minor Atom, Atom and Minor Peewee goes from Dec. 27 to 30.
Thanks for picking up another copy of Hockey Now.
We hope you continue to enjoy the stories of the various individuals and teams that make up our vibrant hockey community. |
